Jim McIrvin and 3 happy kids.

71 Kids Flown, 309 Total for the Year!
Our fourth Young Eagles event for the year, held on September 13th, proved to be a great day for flying and eating pancakes. We started flying Young Eagles around 8 a.m. and by 3 p.m. we had flown a total of seventy-one kids. This brings our total for the year to 309 Young Eagles!

The six pilots and many volunteers made for another successful Chapter 35 Young Eagles event. Safety is always our number one concern and the many volunteers ensure all of our events are safe. Thanks to all of the volunteers who have made this year’s events possible.

Here is a summary of the Young Eagles flown throughout the year.

Date Location Young Eagles Flown
April 12th San Geronimo 178
May 17th New Braunfels (SWRFI) 23
June 21st San Geronimo 37
September 13th San Geronimo 71
Total 309

We do not have any additional Young Eagles events planned for the remainder of the year; however, I have been contacted by a Boy Scout troop who would like to earn their Aviation merit badge. We have provided this service once before and everyone involved had a great time. In addition, the scouts came back the next weekend and helped landscape the area in front of the clubhouse. The scoutmaster who contacted me last week said that he has about forty scouts who would like to earn their Aviation merit badge. We are trying to set up a date for late October or early November. Once I have more details I will be calling people asking for volunteers. For the Aviation merit badge, the scouts perform most of the requirements the evening before their flight, camp out at the airport, and then get their flights the next morning.
The national total for Young Eagles is now at 972,804 and with three months left I think the goal of one million Young Eagles is within reach. The Young Eagles program has been such a success that EAA is continuing it next year and hopefully for many more years to come. Of course Chapter 35 will be flying more Young Eagles next year and we have currently scheduled three events for April 26th, June 12th, and September 27th.

US and the European Union to Discuss Open Skies Policy

The EU is sending a 50 member delegation to Washington early this month to discuss liberalization of transatlantic passenger and cargo service between the 2 continents. An open skies accord would allow US and EU carriers unlimited flight access to each other's airports. The meeting is historic because it will the first time the EU has negotiated a an aviation agreement with the US. The EU and the US are the two largest economies in the world. kgn

Let's Hear From You

A newsletter is only as good as it’s content. You are invited to contribute. Any stories, pictures or upcoming events that you know of, please send them to the editor. If you like to surf the web, and you run across an interesting aviation related news story or photo, please send me the URL (web address) and I will research it.

Digital photos must be either JPEG or GIF. Do not send large picture files, I won’t download them if they are over 500k in size because I am using dial-up. You can resize any digital picture with most any photo editor. Most of the photos that I use in the newsletter are between 15k and 100k in size. Please send your contributions to kris123@tds.net. I will accept MS Word, MS Works, WordPerfect or most any text document including emails.

Young Eagles Photos

EAA Chapter 35 hosted their popular “pancake fly-in” yesterday at San Geronimo Airpark (8T8). I enjoyed the opportunity to capture images of the dedicated pilots that make this event a success. During a Young Eagle’s fly-in, pilots volunteer their time and airplanes to take children on free flights. This is a wonderful, safe introduction to aviation for these children.

Hats off to the pilots and volunteers of EAA Chapter 35 for another successful event!!

Soutwest Regional Fly-In

SWRFI, our area’s only sanctioned Regional EAA Fly-In Convention, will be held during the third weekend of May, 2004, the 13th, 14th, and 15th, with the big all-out workday on Saturday, the 8th. We will again have the splendid facilities of the New Braunfels airport—and we will be there for many more years, I’d wager.

What will be new and different for 2004 is a complete change to the layout. A major effort is being made by your SWRFI leaders to make the grounds much more amenable to the attendees, including getting all of the forums co-located, and even bringing the fly market into the area where the commercial vendors are. All in all, it will be easier for the arriving pilots, the visiting public, and for the EAA volunteers.

Now that SWRFI is “back home,” our chapter has the privilege of contributing to the success of this event once again. There are opportunities for volunteers in many areas, so mark your 2004 calendar now.

Chapter 35 members who hold officer positions in SWRFI are: Don Staats, a vice president; Norris Warner, a vice president; Deck Yoes, secretary; and Gene Kent, treasurer, (not to mention Stan Shannon, SWRFI president, who is also a Chapter 35 member). Each of these officers has several responsibilities, so please check with them to see how you can be most useful. Thanks.

Norris Warner
